Review – Dreamgirls – The Liverpool Empire

WHAT a show!
Dreamgirls has made a return to the Liverpool Empire following a successful 2021 run – and one again it hasn’t disappointed.

The big-budget production follows the story of The Dreams (formerly The Dreamettes) – a trio of talented and ambition women who want more than anything to succeed on show business.

The three (Deena, Lorrell and Effie) take an opportunity to sing behind well know performer, James Thunder Early, under the management of smooth-talking Curtis Taylor, Jr. Curtis.

From there comes a rollercoaster of ups and downs, both professionally and personally.

Life navigating fame in the charts is complicated.

Deena just wants to sing, Lorrell embarks in a seven-year affair with married Mr Early and Effie deals with a complicated journey of heartbreak and finding independence.

The music and talent of all singers is stellar, however there’s a moment before the interval, for ‘And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going’ which is both chilling and warming.

Those who weren’t moved to tears were speechless.

This is the only show I’ve seen (and taken part in) a standing ovation before the interval.

Dreamgirls has it all – drama, love, rejection, strength, sisterhood, inspiring moral fibre and of course incredible music.

It’s a must-see!
