TO mark the first lighting of the new Everyman five years ago today, the theatre has announced the date for an Open House event, as part of a month of birthday celebrations.
On Saturday 23 March, the Everyman Theatre will open its doors to allow people to explore and find out more about the award-winning building.
People from across the region will be invited to discover parts of the theatre usually closed off to the public, and hear about the work of some of the Everyman’s talented backstage staff.
There will also be the opportunity to take a sneak peek at rehearsals for Nick Bagnall’s latest production – a fiendishly anarchic take on the musical Sweeney Todd, featuring former EastEnders actor Kacey Ainsworth.
Fun workshops for children will take place throughout the day, and there will be performances from young people involved in Young Everyman Playhouse (YEP) to see first-hand some of the work they do.
Gemma Bodinetz, artistic director of Everyman & Playhouse, said: “Time is a great deceiver. In many ways it seems like yesterday that the new Everyman opened its doors to the public for the first time, and in others it seems as though we’ve always been here. I think that is perhaps due to the fact that this new Stirling prize winning building grew so perfectly out of its much-loved predecessor.
“But five is still young; we have learnt a lot in that short span of time and are committed to making sure that the Everyman’s relationship with this remarkable city deepens and expands over the decades to come.
“Open House will see the theatre throw open every door for our audiences to delight in what we do and how we do it. There will be glimpses of Sweeney Todd in rehearsal as well as an insight into the all the work we do that does not appear on our stages. We do hope you can join us in what after all is everyone’s theatre.”
The Open House is part of a month-long celebration to mark five years of the new Everyman. Throughout March, the theatre will share highlights from the past five years across social media, including past productions, memories from staff, actors and audience members, across their social media pages.
A full schedule of events for the Everyman Open House will be available on Tuesday 12 March at: www.everymanplayhouse.com. Some activities will require pre-booking, but others will be available to book on the day.
