Local butchers scoop national awards

EDGE & SON BUTCHERS has celebrated three award wins at this year’s highly regarded Farm Shop & Deli Awards.

The company, headed by husband and wife duo Callum and Debbie Edge, collected accolades for ‘Butcher Shop of the Year’, ‘Regional Winner’ and ‘Overall National Retail Award Winner’ at the national awards ceremony in Birmingham after being judged by a panel of industry-experts.

With locations within Liverpool’s award-winning Delifonseca Dockside and its original site in New Ferry, Wirral, Edge & Son serves up a range of cuts and products from locally reared and slaughtered beef, pork, lamb, mutton and poultry.

Fifth Generation Butcher and Proprietor Callum said: “Edge Butchers started trading in New Ferry in 1844 and over the intervening 174 years we have seen huge changes in farming and butchery practices – not all for the better. At Edge & Son, we believe that we have a responsibility to sell traditionally bred, naturally fed, farmed and compassionately handled meat that has been locally produced and expertly butchered. We ensure the provenance of all our livestock and the taste of the product speaks for itself – both the local environment and economy benefits.

“It’s incredibly rewarding to be recognised by an industry body such as the Farm Shop & Deli Awards for our work, not only in our individual category but as both Regional and Overall winners, which will certainly be remembered as a huge highlight in our business’ history. It’s especially gratifying to receive feedback from such esteemed and knowledgeable judges who really ‘get’ who we are and value our business ethics.”

Family-run Edge & Son holds a wealth of experience which spans five generations. Its livestock is sourced within a 25-mile radius, cutting food miles to a minimum and maintaining a personal relationship with local farmers to ensure knowledge of the animal’s heritage, feed and welfare standards to name a few.

The outlet was highly commended by the judges, with praise for its highly ambitious management and innovative plans for the future, to its traditional and native yet rare product stock and its commitment to sustainability. One judge complimented the retailer’s ‘substantial growth, dynamic work in joining Delifonseca in Liverpool and its integral service to the community’, while another said: “A lot of butchers could learn a thing or two from Edge & Son. I love their dedication to ‘nose to tail’ eating as well as the education of staff and customers.”

Proprietor of Delifonseca Candice Fonseca added: “We are so proud of the Edge & Son team and it’s exciting to see them recognised alongside some of the country’s finest retailers by key industry players for the sustainable and ethical work that they do both from the butcher’s counter here at Delifonseca Dockside and from their New Ferry premises, where their own small abattoir is attached.

“With so many options for consumers to purchase meat that is essentially industrially produced in factories, we hope that these accolades will continue to raise awareness amongst the public when it comes to local and responsibly-sourced produce with true traceability that has been handled by passionate professionals.”
