Open House 2018 line-up announced

THE University of Liverpool’s Open House festival returns for its second year this May with a week of talks, performances, exhibitions and interactive experiences showcasing great ideas, knowledge and culture.

The diverse list of speakers and contributors includes American chef and author Ken Hom, the Mayor of Liverpool City Region Steve Rotheram, and prolific Shakespearean actor Michael Pennington.

Together with some of the University’s leading researchers and other guest contributors, they’ll be delivering an illuminating and entertaining programme that offers something for everyone.

Talks and debates

Ken Hom will discuss Chinese values and how they are relevant to the world today on Tuesday, 15 May. Tickets to this event, which takes place at Liverpool World Museum, also secure access to the stunning China’s First Emperor and Terracotta Warriors Exhibition.

Steve Rotheram will join a panel discussion and live audience debate on Thursday, 17 May to consider the opportunities devolution presents to the Liverpool City Region, one year on from his election as its first Metro Mayor.

Michael Pennington is visiting Liverpool for one night only on Friday, 18 May to perform his acclaimed one-man show Sweet William – a journey through the life and work of William Shakespeare that promises plenty of humour.

Other highlights include an exploration of machines, robots and zombie jobs, an insight into how nanomedicine health research at Liverpool has the potential to dramatically improve lives, and a spotlight on the issue of diversity and bias in our increasingly digital world.

Pint of Science

The physics of gin, the future of food, and the rise of the superbugs all feature as part of Liverpool Pint of Science. Back for its second year, more than 50 University of Liverpool and Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine scientists will be taking to the stage in pubs across the city centre from 14-16 May to share their fascinating research.

LightNight

The Victoria Gallery & Museum and the Garstang Museum of Egyptology are joining the city’s LightNight celebrations on Friday, 18 May. Activities on offer include an exploration of the ancient Egyptian Underworld, an interactive talk that promises to bring mummification to life, a ceramics art workshop and a miniature battle re-enactment.
