A CAST of young people from the local area, working with a professional creative team, will star in a vibrant production of the Olivier Award-winning In The Heights at the Liverpool Empire this August. Following the success of last summer’s production of Fame, the talented cast of performers will bring to the stage Lin-Manuel Miranda’s (Hamilton, Moana) hit Broadway production.
In The Heights tells the universal story of a vibrant community in New York’s Washington Heights neighborhood – a place where the coffee from the corner bodega is light and sweet, the windows are always open and the breeze carries the rhythm of three generations of music. It’s a community on the brink of change, full of hopes, dreams and pressures, where the biggest struggles can be deciding which traditions you take with you, and which ones you leave behind.
Liverpool Empire Creative Learning Manager Natalie Flynn said, “There’s such as buzz around Lin-Manuel Miranda at the moment, particularly with Hamilton’s success at this week’s Olivier Awards, so it’s really exciting to be able to present our production of his amazing musical, In The Heights. It’s an extremely topical musical that explores themes around diversity and acceptance. It’s about knowing where you’re from and what your roots are but also understanding where your dreams can take you to. There’s so many styles to be explored including salsa and hip hop as well as traditional musical theatre, and the company are definitely up to the challenge.”
The Empire’s Youth Theatre company works under the guidance of industry professionals, which enables them to experience a professional environment, preparing them for the world of work within the theatre industry and many of those involved go on to pursue professional careers in performing arts. The company has been meeting regularly and working hard in preparation for the full scale musical, which plays at the Empire Theatre from 24th to 25th August 2018.
Natalie added, “Being a part of the Youth Musical Theatre and Dance Company is a journey of pure passion and dedication, it’s a wonderful supportive experience. The performers’ dedication and hard work is an inspiration to see, they genuinely love being a part of this project and have truly become a company. These productions offer them the opportunity to put into practice everything they have already learned. There are so many fantastic dance schools and performing arts colleges in and around the city, and we’re supporting that learning by helping them get some experience on a prestigious stage such as the Empire’s.”
