WE were proud and delighted to to be highly commended at the O2 Media Awards last night (9th November). It was a great night and congratulations to Asian Image who won in our category of Best Community Publication. We were also made up to meet the impressive community campaigner Dena Murphy who presented us with our award, she made a wonderful speech and we’ll leave it there…
“I don’t know why I have been given the honour of presenting this very important award.
“Is it because of the work I do, or because I read up to 10 books a week and average three newspapers a day, I don’t know?
“Manchester has experienced one of the worst years possible. Some of you will have seen events and heard sounds that hopefully the average person will never witness.
“You come in to contact with the bereaved, with people whose hearts are broken. The lost and damaged in our society.
“I want to thank you all for the work you do, for your ethical standards, your honesty and compassion.
“You are not just journalists, no matter which medium you serve, you are historians, the diarists of the 21st Century.Your words and pictures are never lost. They go into archives or become part of a family or local history.
“Your pens and cameras are a sword of justice, that cuts through the red tape; exposes the rotten side of humanity and helps bring to justice those who hurt and abuse the vulnerable and helpless in our society.
“You also tell us the happy, joyful silly gaffs which make us smile.”
