Football and dance combine in UK premiere

LIVERPOOL arts organisation Hope Street Ltd will bring the multi-award winning Vero Cendoya Dance Company to Liverpool, presenting the UK premier of their dance theatre performance The Match.

Football takes centre stage in this contemporary dance piece, where 5 professional dancers will perform with 5 actual footballers and even a referee. But this is no ordinary football match. In fact, it might turn out to be much more than just a game of two halves, where the performers make their own rules…

The performance will be held at the FireFit Hub, a state of the art, world-class facility for young people in the heart of Toxteth on Sunday 22 October, 5:30pm.

The Match is inspired by the film “The Referee”, directed by Paolo Zucca, and has toured to sell out audiences all over Europe and in South America. This production was awarded the best performance prize at the Fira De Tarrega festival 2015, and is the winner of the Critics Awards 2015 for the best Art Street Performance. It was also nominated for Spain’s prestigious MAX Awards in three categories: Best Cast, Best Show Revelation, and Best Authorship Revelation.

On the Verge festival peoducer, Montserrat Gili, said ‘We are very excited to bring such a high quality Spanish company to Liverpool for the first time. This will be a very different kind of dance performance, mixing real dancers with real footballers. And since football has always been intrinsically linked to the spirit of Liverpool – what better city to host the UK premiere of The Match?’

Peter Ward, Hope Street Ltd. Director, added ‘Liverpool is a world class city, it leads in the fields of culture, sport and science and we are so proud to bring this brilliant dance piece to the UK for the first time. Dance is for all, no matter if you’re a Liverpool FC, Everton FC, Tranmere Rovers or, heaven forbid, Man Utd fan and Hope Street Ltd are committed to supporting the development of excellent dance performance in the Liverpool City Region.

“As we have a long history of working in collaboration with our European neighbours, we believe that it’s important to demonstrate the major successes that working with Europe can have in our communities.”

The Match is presented as part of On The Verge, an exciting, biennial festival which showcases provocative new performance work in unusual places and spaces across the city of Liverpool. The festival is produced by Hope Street Ltd. and this year takes place from 19-22 October 2017, in addition to ‘The Match’ the festival will also present work by emerging artists in a variety of unique spaces including a bus, a karaoke bar, a locker room, a bar and even beneath a gigantic skirt.

Free tickets will be donated to FireFit Hub for their users in the Toxteth community.
