A TEAM of 40 Liverpool-based solicitors will run a collective 200km along the Mersey to raise money for cancer research. Staff from EAD Solicitors, which has offices on Riverside Drive, will take on the 5k challenge as part of a day of fundraising for local charity North West Cancer Research, on March 31st. The fundraiser which will take place from 2pm will also feature a cake bake competition which will be judged by 2010’s ‘MasterChef The Professionals’ winner and Delifonseca’s Claire Lara. Additional money will also be raised with a raffle, which features prizes such as a signed Everton shirt, a meal for two at a prestigious restaurant and more. Ahead of the fundraiser, four members of staff from EAD Solicitors visited the North West Cancer Research Centre at the University of Liverpool to see first-hand how the money they donate will be spent. They spoke with Dr Shankar Varadarajan, who showed how his ground-breaking research is looking at how a new class of drugs could have the potential to kill cancer cells and inform effective future treatments for patients. Stephanie Walker, a trainee solicitor at EAD Solicitors and organiser of the event, said: “Cancer is a horrible illness which unfortunately effects so many of us. Every single person taking part in next week’s fundraiser has known someone who has had cancer. “I had heard about the work which North West Cancer Research is supporting locally to help advance cancer treatments and diagnosis and it seemed like the perfect charity for us to support. “Our trip to the labs was eye-opening and really helped us understand the importance of funding for cancer research. It was great to actually see where the money we raise will go and speak to the researchers who will benefit from it. “It’s certainly given us all extra motivation to raise as much money as possible during our fundraising day, whether that’s running the 5K or baking the best cakes possible for our cake bake and sale.” Liverpool-based North West Cancer Research has committed to funding more than £11million worth of cancer research over the next five years. Bobby Magee, Fundraising Manager at North West Cancer Research, said: “We would like to thank EAD Solicitors for their support towards and from us all at North West Cancer Research we wish them the best of luck on the day.” To sponsor the EAD Solicitors on their 5k run you can make a donation via their Just Giving page here.
