Free Fitness Classes For Women’s Day

WOMEN in Liverpool are urged to take advantage of free sports classes tomorrow, to celebrate International Women’s Day.

This year’s theme is #BeBoldForChange and Liverpool City Council is encouraging women to make the first step to an active life.

The council is providing women who are first time users with free access on Wednesday to sports centres and a variety of fitness classes as part of the This Girl Can campaign.

This Girl Can is a celebration of active women up and down the country who are doing their thing no matter how well they do it, how they look or even how red their face gets.

It’s a national campaign developed by Sport England and a wide range of partnership organisations.

Later in the evening, all female councillors are gathering before full council to make their commitment to #BeBoldForChange and promote the rights of women across Liverpool.

There are also organisations putting on events across the city throughout March to celebrate International Women’s Day – which annually celebrates women’s rights but also explores what more needs to be done.

Go to to see what events are happening or to let the council know what events you have going on.

Councillor Emily Spurrell, Mayoral Lead for Community Safety, said: “International Women’s Day is an important annual event to mark all the progress that has been made in advancing women’s rights. As the theme this year is Be Bold for Change we are looking at how we can encourage women to strive for even more change. Whether it’s tackling violence against women, promoting women’s education or encouraging women to get fit and active.”

Councillor Tim Moore Mayoral Lead for Organised Sport, added: “It is fantastic to see Liverpool offering this exciting and innovative opportunity for women to take up a range of sporting activities on International Women’s Day.  I’d encourage all women considering increasing their sporting activity to get involved #BeBoldforChange.”
