THE Oval in Bebington will get a £1 million upgrade as part of ongoing work to improve leisure facilities in the borough and offer better health and fitness facilities to residents. The new fitness suite, exercise studio, disabled access and café follow similar redevelopments at West Kirby Concourse and Guinea Gap Leisure Centre in Seacombe. Cllr Ann McLachlan, Cabinet Member for Transformation, Leisure and Culture said: “This is the latest step in our programme of improvements, to ensure we can guarantee a state-of-the-art leisure offer right across Wirral, in line with our 2020 pledges to ensure leisure and cultural opportunities are available to all. “Phase 1 of work at The Oval will create the new fitness suite, and after that we will be creating new exercise studios and a new café and toilets. There will also be accessibility improvements. “There will be some disruption during the work, but I’d ask people to bear with us as it will be well worth it and result in a leisure centre we can get really excited about.” The council has already invested £2 million in other leisure assets in recent years, and will invest another £2 million for 2016/17. The Oval will receive £986,000 of investment, with a target of increasing revenue, tackling obesity and raising life expectancy in the local area.
