Rio Olympic Spirit Arrives At Liverpool ONE

SHOPPING centre Liverpool ONE will play host to its own Olympic Games this summer as the city gears up for Rio.

From July 22nd until September 4th, Chavasse Park will be transformed into a miniature Olympic Village with a range of different sports for young people to try.

Usain Bolts-to-be should head to the running track where they can race with their friends and even clock their own record-breaking times.

Other sports confirmed to take part include long jump and triple jump, cycling, table tennis and Boccia, a competitive seated game similar to bowls played predominately by wheelchair users.

Former and current famous-name athletes will also be making guest appearances throughout the summer to help to train the next generation of sporting superstars and share their thoughts on healthy eating.

For those looking to relax in the warm summer air with a bite to eat, Liverpool ONE’s popular picnic boats will be back around the park. Look out for their Sir Ben Ainsley style make-over! Shoppers and sporting fans are welcome to bring their own food or enjoy one of the various takeout options from the surrounding Liverpool ONE restaurants.

Donna Howitt, marketing director at Liverpool ONE, said: “This is a fun, free and engaging way of keeping the kids active this summer.

“The people of Liverpool will be cheering on our Olympians and Paralympians in Brazil later this year and what better way to support them than by giving aspiring young people the chance to try out these sports for themselves.

“This is just one of the many activities we have lined up for the summer. There is lots going on at Liverpool ONE over the next couple of months – the perfect place to soak up the atmosphere with all of the family!”

Assistant Mayor and cabinet member for culture, tourism and events, Councillor Wendy Simon, said: “This city already has a strong reputation for staging high quality, free, family-friendly outdoor events and Liverpool ONE’s summer programme fits the bill perfectly.

“We hope the Olympics will inspire youngsters to try out one of the activities on offer, and you never know, we may uncover a future home-grown sporting star!”

The famous piano festival, Tickle the Ivories, also returns this summer. Visitors will once again be encouraged to try their hand on the piano and perform to the masses at Liverpool ONE.

The festival, now in its sixth year, is open to people of all ages and will take place between July 1st and September 3rd.

Keen explorers should also experience the Nature Trail, looking at the different insects, plants and trees found at Liverpool ONE. This Children’s University accredited activity is perfect for families wanting to soak up the summer sun.
