Epstein Theatre Welcomes Through A Glass Onion

A STAGE production which originated in Australia and has played Off Broadway in New York and wowed audiences at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival will open in its spiritual home of Liverpool next month.

Lennon: Through A Glass Onion will open at the Epstein Theatre on 18 April and play through to 29 April with a total of 14 performances including 4 matinees.

The show, written by John Waters, is part-concert and part-biography and celebrates the genius and musical phenomenon of Lennon.

Glass Onion Mathew StreetThe show features Liverpool actor Daniel Taylor as Lennon who has won critical acclaim as the lead in The Tommy Cooper Show. Taylor is a very amiable chap whilst at the same time being quite charismatic – perfect for the role. He certainly turned a few heads as we were taking photos in Mathew Street prior to the press launch in the Lennon Suite at the Hard Days Night Hotel. Danny is joined by accompanist Stewart D’Arrietta who has been involved with the show since its inception in 1992.

The pair took a break from rehearsals to perform to the city’s media and gave us a wonderful taster of what looks set to be an amazing show.Glass Onion performance

Writer John Waters is one of Australia’s most recognised, respected and critically acclaimed actors and singers. Born in Britain, he has built and retained a fan-base across four decades of theatre, musicals, TV, film and music.

The show was first performed on a small stage at the Tilbury Hotel in Sydney in 1992 – 12 years after John Lennon’s death. The show was an instant success and in the years that followed Waters and D’Arrietta toured the show and sold out venues including The Sydney Opera House before heading to London’s West End for three months.

It recently played a 16-week season in New York, a three-week stint at the Edinburgh Fringe and has just completed a tour of Australia.

So, this show certainly has a good pedigree and, if the 15-minute performance we were treated to –after barely 2 days of rehearsal – is anything to go by, it should go down a storm with Liverpool audiences. I’d book quickly.
