THE Whitechapel Centre wants people to join them on Friday 13th October for The Liverpool Sleepout. Taking place in the grounds of St James in the City Church, participants will be sleeping outside for the night to raise money to help end homelessness in Liverpool. The money raised will help the charity continue helping vulnerable people who are homeless find safe accommodation and support them into reaching their full potential.
Registration for the Liverpool Sleepout is now open and places are going fast. Everyone who signs up will set themselves sponsorship targets to help the Liverpool-based charity continue to provide the life changing services that can prevent people from facing a life on the streets.
In the past, hundreds of people have taken part in The Liverpool Sleepout, raising over £100,000 for The Whitechapel Centre. Now in its 4th year, the charity are hoping to get even more people to join them as they move to a bigger location, St James in the City Church. The event opens at 7pm and throughout the evening there will be prizes awarded for the best cardboard shelter, best onesie and the top individual and team fundraisers, before everyone beds down for the night.
As well as offering the opportunity to raise vital funds for the charity’s work, there is also an important message behind it too. It will give those involved some insight into the experiences someone may face whilst sleeping on the streets such as finding the best and most comfortable spot and trying to remain warm.
Ruth McCaughley, Fundraising Manager for The Whitechapel Centre said: “We are incredibly excited about this year’s Liverpool Sleep out. It’s our 4th year in the city and we’ve moved to a brand new location so that even more people can join our Sleepout Team.
“What’s really wonderful about this event is anyone over 18 can sign up. In the past we’ve had people of all ages and backgrounds joining in – some with a team from work, groups of friends, and even people braving the night on their own!
“Homelessness is something that can happen to anyone, so it’s absolutely brilliant to see people from across the city pulling together to make a difference.
“In the past few years we’ve seen a rise in the number of people who are homeless in Liverpool and the money raised is essential to help The Whitechapel Centre continue to provide support for anyone who finds themselves homeless.”
The Liverpool Sleepout takes place at St James In the City Church on Friday 13th October. On the night people will be sleeping outside but will be in a safe area, with stewards and access to toilets and refreshments. Participants must be age 18 or over and sign up in advance. The registration fee is £10 per person and all participants are asked to raise sponsorship for The Whitechapel Centre.
